Ministers Church Management Seminar (Continued)

Theme: CHURCH MANAGEMENT (Part 4)

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

The sanctity of salient information within the body of Christ requires a high level of confidentiality. It is not every thing you see or know about the church that should be discussed openly; this might discourage young or new converts and wreck their faith. Also, God forbids busybodies and indescriminately or publicly disclosing the weaknesses of the church to outsiders. Paul said he saw certain things in the third heaven that are not lawful for man to utter - 2Corinth.12:1-4. Let us examine the following scriptures in the light of information management:  Proverbs 20:19, Proverbs 11:13a; 16:27, 28; 17:9b. Romans 1:29; 2 Corinthians 12:20, 1Timothy 5:13; 2, 1 Timothy 5:13; 2 Thessalonians 3:11, Proverbs 25:9-10, Matthew 18:15.

GIFT AND TALENT MANAGEMENT

As leaders, we are expected to spot  and harness with love, the spiritual gifts and talents of our members for growth and development of the church and God's kingdom in general. Spiritual Gifts are bestowed by the Holy Spirit to profit for the kingdom of God; e.g. gift of Prophecy, revelation, healing, etc. Talents are special abilities given to us by God; e.g. ability to draw, sing and dance wonderfully well. Talents can be inherited, learnt and developed while gifts are given by God and received by a child of God to profit into His kingdom. Exodus 31:1- , 36:1-2, 31:1-7.

While managing their gifts and talents, leaders should have no reason whatsoever to be jealous of what their members possess. Rather, they should guide in love and help members or workers who possess such gifts towards maximizing such potentials to the glory of God and the blessing of humanity. Knowing fully well that every good and perfect gift comes from the LORD, leaders should be well positioned to properly manage those gifts and talents. 1Cor.12:1-6, Ephes.4:1-8, Rom.12:6-10, 1Corinth.14:26.

MATERIAL AND FINANCIAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Do not be a waster of God's resources; be an astute manager of all resources in God's kingdom, as a steward. Resources such as landed property, buildings, vehicles, money, etc, must be properly managed with utmost accountability, towards the advancement of God's kingdom. They must be held in high esteem, not as personal but as God's own property; that way, church leaders will be cautious of the way they treat or handle church resources.  John 6:1-13, 12-13*,  Lk 9:12-17.

TIME MANAGEMENT

When you have sought and got the mind of God on a matter, do not be a sluggard or a time waster in implementing His directives.    "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might... Eccles.9:10. Paul's zeal for the tradition of the fathers in persecuting the church was translated into positivity when he encountered the Lord Jesus; he wasted no time in carrying out the Lord's directives - Galatians 1:13-17. Do not procrastinate. Do not waste time in unnecessary, minor things. Concentrate on what is major and reduce focus on the minors. Col.4:5, Ephes.5:15-17, James 4:14-14, Eccles.3:1-8, 11, Prov.6:6-8, 27:1, Psalm 90:12.

"Time is our most precious gift because we only have a fixed amount of it" - RICK WARREN.

"Serve God by doing common actions in a heavenly spirit, and then, if your daily calling only leaves you cracks and crevices of time, fill them up with holy service.”  CHARLES SPURGEON.

Also, time must be properly managed in all we do at the pulpit - in preaching, in teaching, in announcement, in giving testimonies, etc. This is to give time for other activities in the church, especially after service closes. However, there are services in which "Time" can not be preset. such include: Deliverance and Healing Services, Prophetic gathering, Anointing Service, etc.

PULPIT MANAGEMENT

The pulpit is part of the "altar of sacrifice" for ministration unto God. The presence, that is, the fire of God, radiates from the altar into the congregation. We are to manage situations on the altar and around the pulpit so as avoid unnecessary distractions during services (Leviticus 6:9-13). Pulpit ministers are to ensure Spiritual and ethical decorum on the altar and at the pulpit as mistakes on the altar can easily be noticed by the congregation.

RISK & CRISIS MANAGEMENT

By the Spirit of God, Joseph assisted Egypt to manage crisis (Gen.41:1-44). Also, Paul the Apostle had to manage crises many times in the Corinthian Church. 1Corinth.3:1-9, 8:1-11. In all organizations, the church inclusive, risk management is central to the success of leadership and management.

PERSONAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Manage your health. It takes a healthy spirit, soul and body to do ministry effectively and successfully. Jesus demonstrated this during His ministry on Earth. Even though God has promised us sound health, yet we have to manage our health to be effective for the advancement of His kingdom and to the glory of His name (3John1:2, Jerem.33:6, 1Corinth.10:31).  If God rested after His six-day work of creation, then we all need rest. Jesus needed to rest (or sleep) after tidious ministry activities; let us learn from Him (Genesis 2:1-3, Matt.8:24, ). The Day of Rest (Sabbath) is sanctified, not only to worship God in spirit and in truth but also to have enough time to rest on weekly basis.

Eating good and hygienic food, drinking good water, eating fruits and vegetables, as well as bodily exercise, are very necessary for us to maintain good health Acts (27:34). Also, maintain a healthy heart by not keeping grudges or malice but find a reason to be merry and happy always, even in the face of challenges. Pray and seek counsel, if necessary, instead of getting worried over your challenges (Proverbs 17:22, 3:7-8).

Physical training, exercise and relaxation/rest improve and benefits our health (1Tim.4:8).

Theme: CHURCH MANAGEMENT (Part 3).

Topic: HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN THE CHURCH

Gen.6:5-6, 3:1-24, 2Kgs6:1-7, 1Cor.3:1-6, Lk 9:12-17, 1Corinth.14:26.

Humans are the most difficult entity to manage in any work place. God Almighty attests to this in Genesis 6:5-6. Leaders are accountable to God on how effectively they manage God's own business ( i.e. the flock/church). Jere. 23:2, Ezek.34:10, 15. Failure of the leadership to effectively manage the human resources of an organization can lead to underproduction, losses and crises, in the entire organization. Prov.29:2, 11:14. As leaders, we must be diligent to feed the flock and know the state of the flock. Prov.27:23*, 1Pet.5:2, Acts20:28*, John21:15-17*.

Just as God describes human nature and character in Genesis 6:5-6, Management Theories X and Y (by Social Psychologist,  Douglas McGregor) describe how leaders should manage their human resources, so as to get quality results.

McGregor Theory X of Management opines that no human being is ready to work unless they are (forced in some ways) to do so and that motivation should be by "carrot and stick" approach. "Carrot" for faithfulness and excellence; "Stick" for unfaithfulness and laziness". Here, managers are pessimistic about human behaviour. That is, management assumes that human beings generally (and naturally) have the following characteristics:

*Dislike their work.

*Avoid responsibility and need constant direction.

*Have to be controlled, forced and threatened to deliver work.

*Need to be supervised at every step.*

Have no incentive to work or ambition, and therefore need to be enticed by rewards  to achieve goals.

Theory Y of management has an optimistic opinion of workers, that you can bring out the best in them by allowing them to be self-motivated and encouraging them to apply their own initiatives in improving/increasing productivity. Management is optimistic about their workers' ability to deliver with very little or no supervision. Unlike Theory X organizations, theory Y organizations encourage open communication rather than controlling the staff forcefully.

Theory Y organizations also give employees frequent opportunities for promotion.

This style of management assumes that workers are:

*Happy to work on their own initiative.

*More involved in decision making.

*Self-motivated to complete their tasks.

*Enjoy taking ownership  of their work.

*Seek and accept responsibility, and need little direction.

*View work as fulfilling and challenging.

Solve problems creatively and imaginatively.

All these reflect workers' increasing desire for more meaningful careers  that provide them with more satisfaction than just money.

The Disadvantages of Theory X and Y.

Both theories have their challenges. The restrictive nature of Theory X, for instance, could cause people to become demotivated and non-cooperative if management approach is too strict. This may lead to high staff turnover or  members leaving the church for other places, which could damage leadership reputation or that of the church in the long term.

Theory Y approach gives people too much freedom; this may allow them to stray from their key objectives [ in this case, Christian virtues and obligations] or lose focus completely. Less externally motivated individuals may also take advantage of this more relaxed working environment by not following the rules to the latter.

Hence, for effective Human Resource Management, both theories X and Y should be harmonized. By implication, as Managers of God's resources, Pastors, Leaders and other ministers within the church system should carefully and consciously apply these theories for optimum results.

MINISTERS CHURCH MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

Venue: VictoryLand Apostolic Chapel Obada-Oko, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Date: Saturday, 19th March, 2022.

Theme: CHURCH MANAGEMENT (Part 2)

Topic: IMPORTANT AREAS IN CHURCH MANAGEMENT

We have examined the meaning and the need for church management. We shall now explore more to broaden our knowledge on this subject matter.

Management” is another word for “stewardship”. Stewards in the Christendom ( i.e. Managers) are: Ministers-in-Charge, Coordinating Ministers, Ordained Elders Superintendents, and Overseers. They have certain responsibilities entrusted to them by God through their leaders. As believers, each of us are managers of spiritual resources with which God has entrusted us. And as a church, leaders are managers saddled with the responsibility to ensure proper organization and appropriation of all resources towards lasting (quality) growth and development in the church. The ultimate goal of Church Management encompasses GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT and ADVANCEMENT of God's kingdom.

A serious problem with many Christian organizations and their leaders today is that of organizing and managing the spiritual, physical and material resources at their disposal. If labourers for spiritual harvest are few  as Jesus declares in the scriptures , then they should be properly organized and mobilized to satisfy the Plenteous harvest or unlimited needs of the church (according to Economic Principle).  Matt. 9:36-38, Lk10:2.

Management is a teamwork, as God Himself demonstrated at creation when He made a call to the entire host of heaven, namely the twenty-four elders and the angels: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea..."  (Genesis 1:26). In like manner, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward (or return) for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. The best teams do not have people with similar skills – they combine the diverse talents and backgrounds from a pool of diverse individuals and appreciate the gifts that each one brings to contribute.  Great teams have people that know their role and appreciate others as well. More relevant passages of the scriptures on church management teawork include: Proverbs 27:17 ( "iron sharpeneth iron", so team members sharpen another), 1Corinth.14:26, 1Peter 4:8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:17-20.

Let us examine some important areas of management that will foster lasting growth and development of the church:

*1. Human Resource Management

*2. Information Management

*3. Gifts &Talent Management

*4. Material/Financial Resource Management

*5. Time Management

*6. Risk Management

*7. Pulpit and Altar Management

*8. Health Management

Theme: UNCOMMON MERCY

Text: 1Chronicles 13:1-14, 2Samuel 6:1-12, 2Samuel 9:1-14,  Exod.33:9-19, John5:1-15, 14:14-21, Rom 9:9-18.

Exhortation

"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place" - 2Corinthians 2:14.

Alleluiyah! We have just scaled through the first half of the year and no doubt, our Heavenly Father has been there for us all the way. Glory be to God Almighty for His saving grace that has continued to guide, guard and protect  us since the beginning of the year. According to His promises that never fail, He has remembered us for good and filled our mouth with laughter; He has made the crooked ways straight and surmounted every mountain of difficulty. He has paved way for us into unlimited breakthrough and that is why we can boldly say (like Paul the Apostle), "By the grace of God I am what I am"- 1Cor.15:10.

For all the victories, the breakthroughs and diverse testimonies bestowed upon us so far, as a church and as individuals, we jointly re-echo "Glory be to God in the highest". We thank the Almighty God for His mercy that endureth forever. No doubt the LORD still has a lot in stock for us in the second half of the year which commences this month. He has declared we should launch into the realm of UNCOMMON MERCY. It is the kind of mercy bestowed by God upon Obed Edom (2Samuel 6:1-12, 1Chronicles 13:1-14), the uncommon mercy bestowed upon Mephibosheth (2Samuel 9:1-14), such as was bestowed by Jesus upon the man by the pool of Bethesda (John5:1-15), the kind Jesus had on the sick and multitudes of people, healing and releasing diverse blessings upon the people (Matthew 9:35-36, 14:14-21).

As we pray together this month, the Uncommon Mercy of God shall speak for us in a spectacular way in Jesus' name.

MINISTERS CHURCH MANAGEMENT SEMINAR.

Venue: VictoryLand Apostolic Chapel Ibooro, Ogun State.

Date: Saturday 19th March, 2022

Theme: CHURCH MANAGEMENT (Part 1)

Topic: Effective Church Management.

Text: Romans 12:11, Luke 19:10-23, Nehemiah 11:16-22 , 2Chronicles13:10, John 21:15-17, 1Corinth.12:4-21.

THE CHURCH AS A "BUSINESS"

The church is like any other business but it is an ecclesiastical business with heavenly mindedness and earthly concerns. The church is a spiritual business with diversities of integral parts/factors — spiritual, social, financial and others. That was why Jesus made the statement: “I must be about my father’s business” -Luke 2:43-50 [verse 49]. The church must be treated like any other serious business, if there will be significant growth and development. Jesus delivered His Father’s business to us (as Ministers of the New Testament) when He was going back to heaven, under the supervision and direction of the Holy Spirit; Hence He said “Occupy till I come” --Luke 19:12. He also said “I must go about My Father’s business while it is day. The night cometh when no man can work” -- John 9:4. God is the owner and Jesus Christ is the head of this business called “Church”_1 Peter 2:9, Ephesians 1:18-23.

For any business person who wants to survive, proper harnessing/management of all resources is key and this must be done with all sense of accountability and perseverance to succeed. No business person that wants to profit at the the end of a business session will toy with proper management.  Our God is the first and best manager and He is interested in the proper management of all the resources He has bestowed upon the Church.

WHAT IS EFFECTIVE CHURCH MANAGEMENT?

Church Management consists in harnessing all resources — Spiritual, Financial, Intellectual, Human and Non-human inherent in a church, qualitatively and quantitatively, towards the growth and development of the church, for the glory of God. Effective Church Management focuses on high efficiency in church management for fruitful and productive results; That is, harnessing these vast resources for maximum gains into God's kingdom. Romans12:1, 5-12, 11*, 1Corinthians 12:4-22, Ephesians 4:8-13 [Managing Spiritual Gifts], Acts 6:3, 1-3, 1Chronicles 26:19-30 [Human Resource Management]. The ministry is a serious business and must be treated so and managed well; Romans 12:11. Jesus Christ Practised Effective Human Resource Management- Luke 9:12-17. And He also practised Resource/Material Management. (John 6:1-14). Effective Resource Management was also practised in the old testament 1 kings 18:8, 1 kings 4:38, Luke 9:12-17. The Church is God’s own business & property and must be managed well.

Within Effective Church Management, there are diversities of Gifts, differences of Administration and diversities of operations–But the same Lord & the same spirit -1Corinthians 12:4-9. Like any other business, satisfaction and profit making are the ultimate aims of the business (management) called the Church. The profits here are the souls won into the kingdom of God. The diverse Gifts and other resources bestowed on the church by God must be properly managed for the expansion and advancement of His kingdom. The human elements involved in church management are headed by the pastor in every assembly. All assemblies under a ministry are headed by the superintendents or General Overseer (G.O). Of all these, Human & Financial Resources are the most difficult to manage [Gen 6:5-6, 3:1-24]. Even God Himself has a tough time managing “man".

It is foolishness for any church not to practise Effective church management. A church that is poor in management will be limited in quality membership, growth and development.

PROPHETIC PRAYERS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH (Starting, Tuesday 1st Of March 2022.

Theme: I SHALL BE FRUITFUL
Text: Genesis 1: 25-28, Deut. 28:1-13, Psalm 1:1-6, Acts 14:17

Praise ye the LORD!... Alleluiya!
Glory to God Almighty Who has always made His words practical and testimonial upon our lives. Indeed, His words are in Him "Ye" and in Him "Amen" - 2Cor.1:20. He does not promise in vain, neither does He allow His words to fail- Isaiah 55:11. This year, the LORD has promised to remember us for good in every area of our lives. His church shall be remembered for good and so shall everyone that truly put their trust in Him.

In the previous month, He has given us 'Rain of Blessings'. This month, the LORD wants us to maintain a confession, which is, I SHALL BE FRUITFUL. We have to do our own part and leave the rest to Him for perfection since we have this sure word of Prophecy from Him: "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not" -Jerem. 33:3. Understand that doing your own part involves your faith, obdience, prayer and being at the right place at the right time. Hebrew 11:1-6, Deuteronomy 28:1-13, Psalm 1:1-6.

The Psalmist's confession is an encouragement for us "The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands."- Psalm 138:8. We also have these injunctions from the scriptures: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." -Proverbs 18:21.
"For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned" -
Matthew 12:37. So, in all we do this month, let this  confession be in our mouth continually and let it settle in our spirit and soul that, "I SHALL BE FRUITFUL". Indeed, we are destined (by God) to be fruitful in every area of our lives.

To be fruitful is to be productive, to be profitable, to yield abundance and be result oriented in all we do, to the glory of God. All these and more shall spring forth in our lives as we pray in unity of faith this month, in Jesus' name.

Remember, with Jesus Christ, Victory is Sure!

PROPHETIC PRAYERS FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY (Starting, Tuesday 1st of February 2022)

Theme: Rain Of Blessings
Text: Lev.26:4, Joel 2:21-26, 1Kings17:1, 18:41-46,  Prov.10:22, Acts14:17.

Thank God it's another glorious month- Welcome to February! All glory to God Almighty for His goodness and mercy that endureth forever. The testimonies so far cannot be quantified by any measure; and more are still coming, by His grace.

God's mind for us this year is highly reviving and reassuring. Our hope is rekindled for glorious testimonies in every area of our lives. He has remembered us for good and this shall continue to be evident all through the year in Jesus' name- Amen!

We have been coming to His presence with praises and thanksgiving since January, in what the LORD tags for us "Seven Sundays of Winning Praise". Now in the midst of it, this month the LORD directs us to pray on the theme: RAIN OF BLESSINGS. Just as in days of Elijah when he prophesied divine visitation by the rain after three and a half years of intense drought, and just as Prophet Elisha declared by the Spirit of the LORD "Tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria" and it was so, the Almighty God does not play with His words. 1Kgs17:1, 18:41-46, 2Kgs6:25-30, 7:1-20

As a child of God, our theme this month demands your absolute obedience to His injunctions - faithfulness in tithing and other obligations required of you as a Christian. This places you at a favourable position for His Rain of Blessings.
As we pray together in unity of faith this month, working hard under His matchless grace, we shall experience His rain of blessings in all we lay our hands upon to do, in different dimensions, in Jesus' name!

Shalom!

1. WHO IS A WORKER IN GOD'S KINGDOM (THE CHURCH) ?
If you do not know or are not  sure who a worker is, you may not understand your proper place or role in God's kingdom. Just as a company without a formidable workforce remains dormant and underproduced, so is a church without active workers. Tell me a Church without active workers and I will tell you a church without strength, without foresight and without future. Such a church is like a vehicle engine without chassis.

Who Is A Worker?
A worker is one chosen by grace to render certain services unto God for the advancemen of His kingdom, under the leadership of a pastor or leader. 1Cor.15:10, Heb.5:4, Ephe 2:5-8. He is a solder in God's army batallion. 2Tim.2:1-3.

There are diversities of work/workers in the church, namely: Ushers, Choristers / Choir / Singers, Maintenance, Teachers, Welfare, etc. No one is too young to be a worker in their own respect provided they are of the age of accountability, who can differentiate between right and wrong. Joash or Jehoash was the youngest leader that ever ruled; he became king in Jerusalem, at the age of seven (7) years (2Kings12:1-2, 2Chron.24:1). Another one was Josiah, who became king at the age of eight (8) years (2Kings22:1, 12 ).

As workers, we are sowing in God's kingdom towards the growth and development of the church. Workers are on the pay-slip of God  and Christ being the Head of the church, is our paymaster. Gal.6:6-10, 1Cor.3:8, 2Tim.2:6, Col.1:18, Ephe.1:22-23. Workers are Ambassadors for Christ and His church. Ephe.6:20, 2Cor.5:17-20. Also, workers are leaders-in-constant-training. If you are not trained as a worker, tó be a good follower, you cannot be a good leader. 2Tim.1-2,15.

WORKERS AS AGENTS OF GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
1Cor.3:1-15, 2Kings6:1-6, Exod.17:8-13, Acts 6:1-6
GROWTH is all about physical increase in size, number strength and value. DEVELOPMENT is the quality of  membership (the church), which is visible to the environment. Growth is to get bigger in size and number whereas development is improvement and progress in every area of the church, as it contributes positively to the overall life of the church, her members and the environment.

From our knowledge about who a worker is and their qualities, we can see clearly that workers in God's kingdom are agents of growth and development. We are called to work in His vineyard. If we do it faithfully and diligently, God releases the unction for quality increase (growth and development) upon the church. Just do your part faithfully and increase will come. 1Cor.3:6-10. However, it is God's church and so we have nothing to boast of, as workers; we are called by grace and that grace is of God. 1Cor.15:10, Ephe 2:9, Rom 3:27, 11:18.

Whatever work you do in His vineyard, just do it "as unto the LORD", as one who will receive reward from Him. Col.3:23, Ephe 6:6, 1Cor.3:1-13. Whatever work we do, the ultimate aim is to bring souls into His kingdom for expansion (growth and development. Matt.12:30, 2Tim.2:10 ). The unity of the workers with their leader (or pastor), fosters growth and development. The following Bible instances picturize how workers stand as agents of growth and development:
1. Effective Evangelism and Follow-up: Evangelism without proper follow-up is like catching fishes and throwing them back into the river; it is ineffective to cause growth and development. As it was in the case of the Apostles of old after their Holy Ghost Baptism, Effective Evangelism and Follow-up, when prayerfully and tactically done, bring about supernatural growth and development. Acts 2:38-47.

2. Living an Exemplary Christian Lifestyle That Demonstrates The Love of Christ Towards All Men: This can attract unbelievers to Christ. They "read" us and understand the love of Christ better and thereby get attracted to Him. 2Cor.3:2, Acts 2:38-47.

3. Workers Form a Strong Force / Prayer house against satanic activities, for the advancement of the church. 2Tim.2:3-5, Nehem 4:7-12, Ephe 6:10-20.

4. They are Initiators For Growth and Development: Under the leadership of their pastor or leader, workers initiate growth and development in different dimensions. They bring laudable suggestions and contributions, they initiate projects and motivate church members, like the sons of the prophet. They teach members to learn commitment and sacrificial giving. 2Kings6:1-6, Acts 2:38-45, 4:32-37.

5. They are Helping Hands To Their Pastor in different areas and teach members same through the good examples portrayed by them. 2Kings 6:1-6, Matt.12:30.

6. They portray good virtues and characters in the eye of the entire membership of the church, as good example to them. 2Cor.3:2, 1Tim.4:12-13.

7. They Encourage and Strengthen Their Leader, in Word, in Obedience, in Unity, in Prayer, in Giving, ... This is symbolized by holding Moses' hands up during the war with Amalek. Exod.17:8-13.

*Final Note: God is not looking for "multitudes to work for Him. He is looking for"few" available ones, who are ready to be committed to Him. If we refuse to work for Him, He can replace us with "Stones", people we least expect, who have been far away from the grace. When the children of Israel were going for war, the instruction given to Gideon in this wise was to select the best "few" who were fit and ready. Judges 7:1- 12, Matt.22:14.
